With the new change to digital television comes a load of free Vietnamese television. Thank God!
My parents are one of those very traditional people who believe television is the creator of all the world’s evils. It’s been 15 years, and they are still adamant about saying no to cable television, don’t even mention about Direct TV [ but phim chuong was fine] I didn’t even know what MTV was until I entered college. I was hoping that the creation of SBTN or Hon Viet TV or TVB Vietnam, available on DirectTV, my parents would finally give in and allow us to get Direct TV, but still their stance did not change. We can watch as much chinese/korean dramas we want, and we can pay our monthly $30 membership at the rental store, but we cannot watch MTV, or E Entertainment, or Bravo.
Recently we got ourselves one of the converter box that is required for the digial tv and voila…my parents found VHN on 18-7, Vietnamese 24 hours a day. Even with their crappy shows and old chinese dramas (very old), my parents and I always look for 18-7 as soon as we turn on the TV. We were always interested in what is on and then sit back and complain about how unprofessional it is…but we accept it because it was in Vietnamese. Finally, Vietnamese 24 hours a day, even if it’s bad. Sometimes, as I am watching that channel, I feel like I am in Vietnam. I wonder why we always look for it. Is it because we can understand it? Is it some kind of pride in us ? Or simply because we miss the homeland? Within the last month, we also found LSTV (Little Saigon TV) on 44-4 and then SBTN on 57-4. THREE channels, 24 hours a day, for FREEEE!!! Sometimes I wonder how is it possible that all these channels, which have their counterpart on DirectTV, can be available for free, it is because the digital signals allows more channels to be bought at a cheaper price?
No matter how corny the shows are, I’m just glad to hear some Vietnamese coming out of the TV … just another reason for my parents to say no to cable television. 🙂
