I think I have mention the name Vũ Ngọc Đãng before. He is the script writer and director of “Bỗng Dưng Muốn Khóc,” the only V-drama that I feel has potential to break into the world market. I have recently stumbled upon a piece of news that is Lương Mạnh Hải / Vũ Ngọc Đãng related that I think is worth mentioning. It has not been well received among overseas Vietnamese drama addicts as seen in forums like Crunchyroll and with mixed emotions in AsianFanatics, but I am not going to make any judgements yet. I am still processing …
Full House, the Vietnamese version ?
Viet Nam will be remaking one of the most loved, famous, and memorable K-drama of all times “Full House.” According to Vietnamnet, Viet Film and BHD Company (headed by the singer turned manager Minh Thuận) has bought copyrights to the K-drama “Full House,” and Vũ Ngọc Đãng will be given the task of “Vietnamize” the script. Filming will start at the end of April and it is to be release some time in the summer of 2009.
Anyone familiar with K-drama will know “Full House,” a story of an orphaned girl ( played by Song Hye Kyo) who dreams of becoming a script writer. She entered into a contracted marriage with an actor (played by Bi/Rain) to get back the her house, which was sold to the actor by her friends. And through some events, the two fell in love. Before “Full House” Song Kye Kyo was known through her role in the drama “All In.” On the other hand, this series gave Bi aka Rain, who is a famous dancer turned singer, his ticket to stardom. The pairing of Song Hye Kyo and Bi gave drama addicts months and even years to spazz on. Recently, KBS has confirmed that a “Full House 2″ was indeed in the making, casting is yet to be announced
It is interesting that the Vietnamese version will not only remake one of the most loved drama, and try to re create one most admirable on screen couple of all times. The cast of “Full House” aka “Ngôi Nhà Hạnh Phúc” will include”:
Lương Mạnh Hải – Hải will play the role of Bi/Rain. I did a short profile on him a while ago in “Bỗng Dưng Muốn Khóc.” (check out previous post) I definitely saw him grown a lot in his acting through his recent work with Vũ Ngọc Đãng, “Beautiful by Every Centimeter.” The director seems to have a love for Hai and has casted him in many of his works. Looking at the promotional pictures for the drama and his role in “Bỗng Dưng Muốn Khóc,” I can understand why he was chosen for this role. I hope he does well, he definitely has potential if he can strip away his “boyish/schoolboy” look.
Minh Hằng – She will portray the role that was played by Song Hye Kyo. Vũ Ngọc Đãng has stated in an interview with hoahoctro that he thinks Hằng is better for the role than Tăng Thanh Hà, which I agree 100%. Tăng Thanh Hà is great with strong female roles and will not be great for this drama, sorry to disappoint fans of the couple. I have yet seen Hằng’s work, but she was the female lead for the movie “Hot Kiss 2,” aka “Giải Cứu Thần Chết” the sequel to the Vietnam’s highest grossing movie of all time “Kiss of Death.” She also won the Ho Chi Minh City Television Award in 2008 with her role in “Gọi Giấc Mơ Về” aka “Calling Back the Dream.” Just like her co-star Thủy Tiên, Hằng’s provocative pictures were plastered over the bloggosphere around April’s Fools, but to everyone’s surprise, Hằng admitted that, indeed, the pictures were hers. Even though the promotional pictures show some potential and hope, I hope her scandal does not overshadow the drama.
I look forward to see the chemistry between these two since the original brought together one of the most famous couple of all times. I am so used to seeing Lương Mạnh Hải and Tăng Thanh Hà together. Therefore, it is hard for me to imagine anything else, but fortunately, Minh Hằng with her innocent looks seems to pair well with the “boyish” look of Lương Mạnh Hải in the promotional pictures. *keep fingers crossed*
Thủy Tiên – (not to mistaken with the one on Paris by Night) She has appeared in Vũ Ngọc Đãng’s work through music. She wrote and sang the themesong for “Beautiful by Every Centimeter” and “Kiss of Death.” She also had a cameo in “Bỗng Dưng Muốn Khóc,” which I did not notice until I re-watch the drama. She was initially asked to work on the music for the drama, but convinced the director to give her the supporting role. Her character is in love with Lam Trường’s character. However, it seems that Thủy Tiên, like many teen idols, is also plagued by the “leaked” of some provocative pictures of herself. I have to say that I am biased against actors and actresses who take these kind of pictures and then apologizes when it is leaked. As of her acting, I will have to wait and see, I have not seen any of her work besides the two minutes from “Bỗng Dưng Muốn Khóc.”
Lam Trường – Trường aka A2 will play the supporting role. If you were growing up in the late 1990s like I am, you will definitely possess one of his CD, attend one of his concert, or have his poster somewhere around your house. Lam Trường can really be considered one of the first V-Pop star. He is also married, has a kid, and frankly, I feel, a bit too old for this drama. He has tried out acting before with the movie “Nu Tuong Cuop/Female Robbers,” which did not do too well and in some way, I can see how his maturity fits in the character, but the rest of the cast is just way too young for him. However, I will keep an open mind about it.
Overall, my hope for this drama is relative high, just because I strongly believe in Vũ Ngọc Đãng’s work but a bit un-nerving due to the casting and the success of the original K-drama . He seems to have a keen eye for dramas that is light-hearted and fairy-tale liked. So far, I feel that this drama is doing well, first, the cast is full of well-known V-pop stars who carry with them a huge fan base. Second, even before the camera is rolling, scandals have already broken out with the two female leads. Third, the fashion seen in the promotional pictures have shown that it is not going to be the typical TV drama. If the acting is not so great, eye candy always help ( i.e. Boys over Flowers). And last but not least, even when everything goes wrong, the story line is comes straight out of the drama bible : contracted marriage, hate turned love, rich man poor girl, etc…
I will be looking forward to see the Vietnamese version, so I hope this will shine a light and give some hope to the Vietnamese drama addicts out there! Keep the faith!
P.S. I know Vũ Ngọc Đãng will include a rat scene in this drama considering it is his signature move in all of his dramas, I just hope it will be short-lived. Also, “Full House” made famous the “Three Bears” song, let’s hope the director will replace with some cute and witty Vietnamese folk song.
